Though the journey of life may seem like a series of random twists and turns, looking back we can sometimes see the hand of God steering us according to His perfect plan. Mathew’s life is an example of this.
Mathew was born in 1968 in Kisii, Kenya, and was reared in a good Catholic family. After graduating from college in 1989 with a degree in sales and marketing, he volunteered part time at the Anglican Church Christian Community Services organization where his older sister worked. It was there that God brought him to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Several moves followed in the intervening years as Mathew got married, pursued jobs, sought better schools for his children, and fled tribal violence that saw their property burned to the ground. In 2008, God led him and his family to Kericho, Kenya, and to a warm, friendly church with solid teaching.
In 2010, the pastor told Mathew about the struggling radio station the church was operating and asked if he was willing to turn it around. Even though he didn’t have any radio experience, Mathew readily accepted, though with much trepidation.
The station had many issues – a rusted-out leaning tower, a small transmitter, unreliable and expensive power, untrained staff, and a studio located 12 miles from the nearest town on a road almost impassable during the rainy season.
Thanks to the help of two mission organizations, Diguna and SonSet Solutions, Mathew was able to secure a new studio in town with upgraded studio equipment, a larger transmitter which greatly increased the potential listening audience, and a brand new tower to replace the old rusty one.
Mathew reports that the station’s impact on the community is “immeasurable.” “People are coming to Christ, marriages are being salvaged, and people are being set free from the bondage of immorality, drugs, and witchcraft.”
