Harold and Joan (pronounced Jo Ann) moved to Elkhart in September 2005 from Newark, Delaware, where they lived 38 years.
Harold retired after 32 years with Hewlett Packard/Agilent Technologies as a research and development design engineer, production engineer and field service engineer. After retirement, Harold and Joan volunteered part-time with Wycliffe Bible Translators in the Northeast Regional Office and also in Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea for two months in 2001. There, Harold was part of a team doing construction work on a new elementary school building, repair of power tools, and some computer updates. Joan worked on updating the community library’s card catalog.
At SonSet Solutions, Harold is involved in production and testing the TB1000 shortwave transmitters, design and production of the lazy-8 shortwave antenna, and variations of the Solar Media Center. He has been involved with many of the spring and summer interns and student co-op projects over the years investigating alternative power sources.
Joan guides in-home ladies Bible studies and also entertains many SonSet Solutions visitors in their home.
The Shiras have two married daughters and five grandchildren.
