A Sanctuary in Time of Need

“RUN! Run far away!” These words echoed in her mind. It was what her aunt had told her with a final hug a year ago.

Amara* was born into a strong religious family, one of seven children, in a West African country. She was adopted by her aunt at the age of five. Her aunt was the only Christian in the extended family and taught Amara about Jesus and the gospel. At a young age, Amara accepted Christ into her life.

Now she was a young woman, and her family wanted her to return to their religion. When she wouldn’t convert, they decided to marry Amara to a man from their faith.

Amara already knew about a hospital and their college of nursing, so that is where she fled. After hearing her story, the lady chaplain took her in and gave her safety. Amara entered the nursing program and is now finishing her first year.

She thanks God for his leading throughout her life. She thanks the college of nursing for taking her in and giving her safety. She also thanks them for the Bible classes every student needs to take. From this, Amara is learning more about God and how to live a Christian life. More than just knowledge, she is being discipled and shown how to mature in her faith. She is also thankful that she is becoming a nurse. This hospital was not only a lifeline to teach Amara nursing skills but also to teach her about her Savior and to be discipled.
