Earl and Cathy have been missionaries with Reach Beyond (formerly HCJB Global) for over 33 years. Cathy grew up as a missionary kid in Burundi, Africa. As an adult, she returned to Kenya to work as the office manager at World Gospel Mission’s Tenwek Hospital in their community development program. Earl’s skill in construction and later interest in hydro saw him take part in various hydro and construction projects in Ecuador in 1980, Tenwek Hospital in 1986 (where he met Cathy), Honduras in 1990, and Ecuador (1991-2012).
After 21 years in Ecuador, God opened another door for the Hartwigs to work in Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 2012. They were “loaned” to the Church of the Nazarene to build a hydroelectric project at Kudjip, a 120-bed hospital. With the completion of this project, the leadership at Kudjip asked Earl to continue being the project manager for various construction projects (staff housing, a potable water system and a hospital expansion project). Each area of infrastructure improvement helped the hospital in its service to the community as well as enhance the possibilities to share Christ.
After 10 years in PNG, they returned to the US in May 2022 to sort out the next step in their ministry journey. They are now working with SonSet Solutions to set up their solar energy division. The goal is to help Christian ministries overseas (radio, healthcare and churches) with their energy needs so that they can further God’s Kingdom.
Throughout the Hartwig’s ministry, God has continued to open doors of opportunity to serve Him. Their heartfelt prayer is that God would be glorified in whatever they do.
