How can children in poverty‑stricken communities gain practical education when teachers, textbooks, and even school buildings are scarce? In the midst of this challenge, how can we reach them with the good news of Jesus?
Innovative Education International (IEI) stepped into this gap with a remarkable solution – the SmartBox – a portable “computer lab in a box.” Now used in 20 countries across four continents, this rugged trunk contains 20 wireless laptops, a router, and a server loaded with a rich digital library of educational programs for every grade level, including biblical resources. Because the system works entirely offline, content remains secure and accessible anywhere. Students learning through the SmartBox are consistently achieving top scores on standardized tests.
For communities where people already own smartphones, tablets, or laptops, IEI offers the portable SmartServer. This compact device provides the same digital library – whether filled with school curriculum or theological study materials – and is built to withstand heavy use in churches, seminaries, and community centers. Learners can even download materials to take home for personal study.
But one challenge remained: what happens when there’s no electricity to charge the equipment?
That’s when SonSet Solutions engineer Leon Amstutz stepped in. Leon was instrumental in the original development of the SmartBox. Now, using power from the sun, he developed the Solar SmartServer Charging Kit – a folding solar panel paired with a compact charge controller. His design not only powers the SmartServer but also integrates seamlessly with the SonSet Solutions Solar Ministry Toolkit.
IEI’s mission is to bring hope and opportunity in the name of Jesus to developing communities through education that challenges the mind, shapes the heart, and engages the hands. At SonSet Solutions, we are honored to partner with them, using technology to help ensure the good news of Jesus is accessible to all.
