Compelled to Leave

“If you leave, you’ll never see my face again until I die.” These were the last words that Yewande’s* father said to her before she left home.

Yewande grew up in southern Nigeria with a Muslim father, a Christian mother, and an older brother who was a leader in the mosque — a recipe for religious and relational strife in her family life. The only time she and her mother felt safe going to church was when her father was out of town, because if he ever found out, he would beat them.

When Yewande wanted to leave her town and live somewhere else, her father objected since he believed she would become a Christian if she left home. It was then that her father gave her an ultimatum and threatened to cut her off from the family, but Yewande felt compelled to leave anyway.

Yewande later came to study nursing at the ECWA College of Nursing in Egbe, Nigeria, but because she had no support from her family, she wasn’t sure how she could pay for her schooling. The college gave her a scholarship to cover tuition fees and room and board, and Yewande is now on track to graduate in November of 2026. She has a passion for women’s health and hopes to show the tangible love of Jesus as a midwife.

Recently, staff from SonSet Solutions partnered with another technical ministry, I-TEC, to finish installing the solar equipment needed to provide reliable 24/7 power to ECWA Hospital and Nursing College. With reliable power, the college is better equipped to train up the next generation of God-fearing nurses like Yewande who can show God’s compassion to those He has called them to serve.
