Sylvia stood outside of the eye clinic giving away precious gifts as people departed from their appointments. Sylvia is a broadcaster at The Cross Radio station in Pohnpei, Micronesia. Pohnpei is a very green, tropical island surrounded by a beautiful blue ocean with a modern city of over 36,000 Micronesians. In this diverse city, everyone from the taxi driver to the government worker, local pastor to fisherman, storekeeper to mother with many children, farmer to teachers, all have their radios tuned to 88.5 FM, The Cross Radio.
The equipment at this Pohnpei radio station has not been upgraded since 2007 “and amazingly has been on the air 24/7 since then.” However, because they have a large listener audience, the station wanted to be proactive in upgrading the equipment. SonSet Solutions recently provided two transmitters to Pacific Mission Aviation (PMA), one to upgrade the station in Pohnpei, and the other to set up a sister station on the island state of Yap.
Sylvia says, “We often get feedback from local pastors saying that they never had formal Bible training and listening to The Cross is like their opportunity to attend Bible school.” The local PMA church Sunday service is broadcast throughout the week along with programs by Chuck Swindoll, David Jeremiah, Rick Warren, Focus on the Family, among others.
A listener shares, “Because of your station, I received Jesus as my Lord and Savior.” Another says, “I love the music, it brings joy to my heart.”
The precious gifts Sylvia was giving away outside of the eye clinic were solar radios so recipients could listen to the radio station’s programs. They walk away with not only new glasses to read the Word of God, but also radios to hear it.
