No Longer in Darkness

The Daasanach people are a seminomadic community spread across Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. Historically unreached with the gospel, they have long practiced animism, witchcraft, and FGM. Their constant mobility makes traditional missionary work — such as door-to‑door visitation — nearly impossible.

To meet this challenge, our partner Ben Manthi, serving with Diguna (a German ministry whose name means “taking the good news to Africa”), launched a Christian radio station in the remote town of Illeret — designed specifically for the Daasanach.

But an FM broadcast only matters if people can actually hear it. In this region, literacy rates are extremely low, and communication is difficult. To bridge the gap, SonSet Solutions provided 240 SonSet Radios to Daasanach families — many of whom had never listened to any broadcast before.

Two local believers, Eugene and Margaret, were trained as broadcasters and began producing programs in the Daasanach language. The impact has been extraordinary. Youth and adults are coming to Christ. Churches that once met under the shade of a tree have grown beyond capacity. Five new churches have been planted, and evangelists are emerging from within the tribe itself. Daasanach believers are even traveling into Ethiopia and South Sudan, carrying the gospel across borders.

The voices of listeners tell the story best:

“God has remembered us. We felt far away, but we thank you partners for considering us… We are no longer in darkness as last year.”

“Our children are also growing in the Lord as they listen to children’s programs.”

“The presenter led me to Christ, and every time God’s Word corrects me when I stray, I pray for His forgiveness.”

Radio Ashe in Illeret is doing far more than broadcasting — it is illuminating hearts, strengthening churches, and carrying the light of Christ into places where darkness once prevailed.
