The news spread like wildfire! God’s fulfillment of the powerful vision he gave Joseph Kebbie 19 years ago was now a reality.
On an overcast Friday, I and a group of around 15 believers from Northern Liberia visited two border checkpoints close to the Makona River. The river serves as a political boundary line with Guinea and Sierra Leone. Officials and believers from area churches came across the border from their respective countries to meet us. We had a wonderful announcement to share: Kioo (“key-OH”) Radio is on the air! Transmitting with 1,000 Watts of power from a tall tower atop a hill, the station enjoys solid coverage well into Sierra Leone and Guinea as well as Liberia where it is based.
A people group known as “Kissi” inhabits the region. They number around 740,000. “Kioo” means gift in the Kissi language. A message of peace and reconciliation is going out over the radio in a region marked by years of war, ongoing tensions, and boundary disputes. Solid biblical content is being aired. Pastors who have no means to attend seminary or Bible school will now be better equipped for ministry. Good music lifts people’s spirits. This is, indeed, an amazing gift!
Many Kissi people live without access to electricity, running water, or Internet. Solar-powered SonSet® radios are an excellent tool for building an audience! It was a thrill to see a Guinean pastor taking SonSet radios by canoe across the Makona River into Guinea, from the very spot from which Joseph escaped with his life, fleeing civil war 32 years ago.
No one would have guessed all that God would do when he gave Joseph this vision so many years before. But this story is not over. As people hear God’s powerful word and the Holy Spirit works, reconciliation to God and genuine life transformation will bear fruit for years to come.
