- Radio Logos Extends Reach in Northern Peru
Deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, a small radio transmitter and antenna are spreading the big message of redemption. Since 2012, Radio Logos has impacted the northern region of Peru by developing broadcast programs in 14 of the 19 indigenous languages and by training local missionaries and believers to produce the programming themselves.
The little radio station, nestled in the village of Chazuta along the Huallaga River, is the third station established by Ray Rising of Wycliffe Bible Translators with the assistance of SonSet Solutions. The first two stations are in Bolivia. Because many of Peru’s indigenous people remain illiterate, having the translated Scriptures passed along through spoken word is crucial.
Now more than ever, the local missionaries working with Radio Logos are eager to expand the station’s impact by distributing radio receivers to nearby people groups. Through recent fundraising efforts, SonSet Solutions is attempting to meet the high demand and recently shipped 540 SonSet® radios to the station. Developed by SonSet’s team of engineers to operate in areas with no access to electricity, these solar-powered devices are warmly welcomed by the people of the region.Continue reading →
- Your Generous Response!
Hurricane Matthew swept across the southwestern region of Haiti on October 4, 2016. With Category 4 winds of over 140 mph and up to two feet of rain falling in some places, thousands of Haitians lost their lives and tens of thousands of homes were destroyed. International ministries, NGOs, and governments responded in epic numbers.
Long-time partner Radio Lumiѐre, which covers up to 94 percent of the country of Haiti with gospel programming, had eight of its 20 sites severely damaged and off the air. They contacted our staff for help. We understood the urgency—victims of this disaster needed to hear both humanitarian and gospel messaging to keep people’s health and hope alive.
SonSet Solutions called on you for financial help to get our missionary on the ground and help get some of the damage repaired. You responded generously. We received $6,715!Continue reading →
- Invisible Waves Changing Lives
Suffering from depression and contemplating suicide, a teacher was aimlessly fiddling with the dial on her radio one night, and happened upon Radio Light, a Christian station dedicated to the propagation of the gospel. Something she heard intrigued her. The message from the Bible brought a ray of hope into her heart that was strong enough to dispel the dark thoughts of suicide. She eventually gave her life to Christ.
A taxi driver listened to various radio stations as he ferried people to their destinations. One day the radio dial broke while it was on Radio Light. From then on, he had no other options—just Christian radio all day long. The message penetrated, and he too gave his life to Christ.
Radio waves go out silently and invisibly, so we don’t always know where they are going and who they might impact. We daily help our radio planting partners around the world with radio equipment, training, and technical support and pray that God’s Word, riding on the radio waves, will change the lives of listeners.Continue reading →
- A Moment with the President
Grab a cup of coffee, have a seat, and join us as we get to know a bit about SonSet Solutions President and CEO David Russell and the ministry he serves. You may be surprised at his background and his favorite dessert! Since November 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of SonSet Solutions, he also shares his excitement and vision for the ministry!
David is a telecommunications engineer by trade and gained experience in the aerospace industry of Southern California. Even though he worked in the “concrete jungle” of Los Angeles, his actual roots are in the Amazon jungle of Peru, where he was born to missionary parents who translated God’s Word into the language of a stone-age tribal group. His multicultural and multilingual upbringing prepared him well for a missionary career that has taken him to many parts of the globe.
David joined the ministry of HCJB World Radio in 1991 serving in Ecuador for nine years before transitioning to what was then known as the HCJB World Radio Engineering Center in Elkhart, Indiana. This operation, now known as SonSet Solutions, was originally created to take on an incredibly daunting task in the mid 1970s during the Cold War. Learn moreContinue reading →
- Hurricane Matthew Disaster Relief
Ravaged. Devastated. Massive destruction. Three days of terror.
These are a few of the words that have been used to describe the country of Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. A country already reeling from the devastating earthquake in 2010, Haiti is in a state of crisis with the death toll reaching 1,000 and climbing.
SonSet Solutions is ready to send one of our own, Leon Amstutz, to help get our partner, Radio Lumiѐre on the air again. “Radio plays an important role in times of crisis,” says Ted Miller, a SonSet Solutions broadcast engineer. “A lot of communities are cut off from communication and people need to find out where aid is available. Radio broadcasts will also tell people how to avoid diseases such as cholera, which is already becoming an epidemic in some areas. Just as importantly, Christian broadcasts give people hope as they are given spiritual truths that help make sense of the mess.”
Radio Lumiѐre, which has been broadcasting for 57 years, covers up to 94 percent of the country of Haiti with gospel programming. With 10 installations throughout the country, eight of them are located in the hardest-hit areas and six of those have been severely damaged. Downed towers, damaged buildings, water-logged electronic equipment, and failed transmitters are just a few of the punches Hurricane Matthew has given the stations.Continue reading →
- Meeting Needs in Mali
Stephen Peacock traveled to Mali recently to install LifePumpsTM with Design Outreach carrying 18 audio Bibles in the dialect of the village where he would be working. As was his habit, this SonSet Solutions missionary planned to leave the audio Bibles with people in the community giving them something even more important than clean water–the eternal Word of God.
It was a huge disappointment to find that the leaders of the community had no interest in receiving the Bibles, although they were friendly and appreciative of the clean water system and monitor. Stephen writes, “At the end of an otherwise productive week, I had packed the audio Bibles in my suitcase to return to the U.S. but felt discouraged at this failed part of the mission. However, God delights in working in ways above and beyond our capabilities.”Continue reading →
- Potential Blessings for Benin
Christians in Benin, West Africa, have found SonSet Solutions’ solar lamp pole (SLP) to be useful in areas where electricity is not readily accessible. Using this ministry tool, which was specifically tailored for their needs, they found a unique way to share the gospel of Jesus with people in their communities. Believers are calling the SLP the Living Oasis, a fitting name for a box that offers life in a dry and dusty land!
So far, one prototype has been placed in Benin to experiment with this new concept. The hope is to place these units in churches, hospitals, clinics, stores, schools, or anywhere it would be appropriate. This will provide not only a lamp to light the darkness, but also a Wi-Fi hot spot for charging cell phones and using those phones to download information, listen to Christian radio, or watch an evangelistic video. The prototype in Benin has been loaded with the French Bible, Christian radio programming, and versions of the “Jesus” film in French, Fufilde, and Bariba, the main languages of the region.Continue reading →
- We’ve a Story to Tell
What an exciting day in November 1974, when the interval signal for TWR Swaziland first rang out with the last line of “We’ve A Story To Tell To The Nations.” So many miracles — a license to broadcast in Swaziland, land on which to build, land that was perfect for the radio transmissions, workers, and sand delivered by a flood right to the site exactly when it was needed. The list of God’s blessings on TWR Swaziland continues to grow.
Now God has provided a larger, newer, more powerful 100,000-watt medium wave transmitter. Larry McGuire, a TWR missionary who serves at SonSet Solutions, is currently helping with the upgrade of the medium wave (AM) antenna system to handle the full 100,000 watts. This, by God’s grace, will send the gospel to more people hungry for God’s Word.Continue reading →
